It sells new and pre-owned consoles, games and accessories, plus collectibles and merchandise, in stores and online, and runs a trade-in programme. The company began in 1984 in Dallas as Babbage's and took the GameStop name in 1999. In January 2026 it operated 2,206 stores in the United States, Australia and France, and its shares trade on the NYSE under the symbol GME.
