Category killer
A category killer is a retailer with a deep range and strong competitive position in a particular product category. Its scale, selection or pricing can make it difficult for smaller general retailers to compete in that category.
The retailer often competes through specialist depth, purchasing scale, recognisable positioning or strong service within its chosen field. Customers may prefer its extensive range over a general retailer's smaller selection. The label describes competitive strength in a category, not a guarantee that the retailer will dominate permanently or avoid changes in customer behaviour.
For example, a large specialist toy retailer may offer far more brands and variants than a supermarket's toy aisle. It may also operate a big-box store, but store size and category dominance are separate concepts. Category management remains important because a deep range must still match demand and remain commercially productive.
