Sales per square foot
Sales per square foot measures sales revenue relative to a store's selling area. It helps compare space productivity, provided the period and definition of selling area are consistent.
The calculation divides sales over a stated period by the relevant floor area. Businesses should identify whether they use total premises area or only customer-facing selling space, and keep that definition consistent. Store location, category mix and online-order activity can affect the result, so the ratio needs context rather than a universal benchmark.
For example, annual sales of £600,000 from 2,000 square feet of selling area equal £300 per square foot per year. Visual merchandising may help improve use of space, but sales density alone does not show profit. A store with high sales and low gross margin may still perform poorly financially.
