Supplier onboarding

Supplier onboarding is the process of setting up a new supplier for trading. It usually includes checking business details, agreeing terms, collecting payment information and adding product or contact data to the buyer's systems.

Onboarding turns an accepted supplier into one that the business can order from, pay and communicate with correctly. Typical steps include confirming company details, setting payment and delivery terms, establishing contacts, collecting product data and testing any ordering connection. Sensitive payment-detail changes need an agreed verification process rather than being accepted casually.

For example, a retailer may need the supplier's case quantities and product identifiers before loading its range into a purchasing system. Supplier qualification assesses capability and suitability; onboarding puts the approved relationship into operation. Completing onboarding does not itself demonstrate that every future delivery will meet requirements.
