Units per transaction (UPT)

Units per transaction is the average number of items sold in each completed sale. It is calculated by dividing units sold by transactions and helps retailers assess basket-building activity alongside order value.

UPT describes item count rather than monetary value. Retailers should decide how to treat multi-packs, bundles and returns so reporting remains comparable over time. A single expensive item can produce a high order value with low UPT, while many inexpensive items can create the opposite result.

For example, 900 individual sale units across 300 completed transactions produce a UPT of three. Bundle pricing may encourage customers to buy more items together, but the reporting system might count the bundle as one sale unit. Average order value supplies the revenue context that UPT alone cannot provide.
