Third-party sellers are knocking off as much as 10% on Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro in China at the moment, in the hopes of countering downturns in the demand for next-gen smartphones.
The iPhone 14 is the latest smartphone in the series and was released in mid-September 2022. Chinese retailers such as Suning.com and JD.com are right now selling the basic model of the latest iPhone for 7,199 yuan ($1,062). This figure is some 800 yuan less than the current price advertised on Apple’s official China website.
The China Securities Journal was the first to report the news, with Canalys and others confirming it soon after. It has also been confirmed that a substantial amount of other legitimate third-party sellers in China are also promoting similar discounts, on both the iPhone 14 pro and the Pro Max.
Several publications have contacted Apple for comment but as of now, the company has not responded. On occasion, it is not uncommon for Apple to sometimes allow retail vendors, particularly in China, to offer price reductions on its phones to ignite sales.
With a number of Android devices also receiving price cuts, experts say that it is overall not a good sign for demand going forward and a decrease in sales figures for the foreseeable future is very much possible. Coming in at around 285 million units sold in 2022, the buying of smartphones in China was the lowest it has been in over a decade. Fourth-quarter sales dropped by 15% as a result, according to the statistics. Sales on the Apple phone have dropped even more since then, with issues such as supply chain delays, worker unrest at contract manufacturers, and the early release of the iPhone 14 all playing a role in the overall slump.
If things don’t pick up soon, the American tech giant might have to start looking at even more drastic solutions to reignite the downward-trending Chinese market.
